Two ways to reduce electric bills at home.

Homeowners who need to reduce electric bills may look at where their hot water heater is installed and how fireplace screens or doors are used.  Both of these objects are sources of heat transfer that may need extra care to make them efficient.

If the hot water heater is installed in a cold space either in the basement or a mechanical room, you can add a hot water heater insulation kit to reduce the heat loss and save energy.  The kit wraps the tank to slow down heat loss during the heating process.  It is not installed on the top or near vents required for the operation of the tank.

If you have a fireplace, it should have rigid glass doors with a heat exchange panel to allow the minimum of warm air to leave the room and go up the chimney.  It is best to keep the doors closed at all times.  When you make a fire, immediately close the doors and open the heat-exchange panel. Also keep the doors closed when the fire is burning and especially when the fire is dying down.  Your fireplace chimney should have a damper installed that stays closed unless the fireplace is in use.
